“Bad Shabbos”

My Rating: 3.54 (aka Still worth it for the laughs)

One line summary: An interfaith, meet-the-parents Shabbat dinner goes very wrong.

The Deets: Give me a Woody Allen inspired Jewish comedy any day of the week and I am there. This one was perfect for a gray summer Saturday. Was it a miraculous film of great depth into the Jewish consciousness and a sharp, insightful commentary on the state of the world? Absolutely not. But it was damn fun, had some witty twists, a bunch of laugh out loud moments, and it was just the right length (also a nod to Woody’s typical trademark 90-minute film that I do miss). This movie won’t blow you away, but it will leave you smiling, and that’s pretty much exactly what it tries to do. Bravo.

Perfect for: If you enjoyed Woody’s less cerebral and more slapsticky films like “Manhattan Murder Mystery,” and if you’re in the mood for some good Jewish laughter.

Where to watch: As of this writing it’s still only in select theatres, but I’m sure it will hit your fave streaming service soon enough.

Food pairing: If you’ve ever had a noodle kugel, then you know. Or half a challah with butter. Or maybe challah French toast. Agree to disagree.
