“Unforgotten”

My Rating: 3.96/4 (aka Totally must watch)

One line summary: A British detective unit investigates “forgotten” homicides.

The Deets: This is another one on my top-ten TV series list, and I believe they’re still making more seasons (currently up to six). Each season the detective unit takes on the case of a homicide that has occurred many years ago (sometimes decades), hence the title of the show, and it’s just kind of brilliantly done; all of the acting is top notch, led by one of my favorite British actors, Nicola Walker (who we first met as the shy Ruth Evershed in the long-running series “Spooks”). There is so much humanity here, and she sets this tone. The storytelling is also beautifully staged – we slowly meet a cast of characters in the early episodes of each season without an explanation of who they are and how they’re connected to each other or the central crime. And then, slowly, we learn the truth, and the central theme of the show: If we have crimes in our past unresolved, we cannot escape the truth.

Perfect for: Anyone who loves crime shows, detective stories, and especially the British variety. But you have to appreciate the slow burn.

Where to watch: You can buy it via Amazon Prime, or you need to subscribe to PBS streaming. It’s kinda worth it just for this show.

Food pairing: Different than for a movie, you might want to mimic the characters and sip some wine while you watch.
