“Conviction”

My Rating: 3.82/4 (aka Definitely worth it)

One line summary: Based on the true story of a woman’s disappearance and the ten-year double trial of her husband.

The Deets: This is a very interesting, intelligent, and intense movie. It’s based on a true story but the protagonist – chef and single mother Nora – who propels the story forward, is made up. And I must say she is a very compelling character, a woman who risks her livelihood to try and exonerate the accused Jacques Viguier (played by the always excellent Laurent Lucas – also see “The Jewish Cardinal”). And there are two main questions that drive the film: first, is Jacques actually innocent? And second, what is the driving force behind Nora’s seeming obsession with the trial and its outcome? We don’t quite get clear answers to either of these questions, but I actually don’t think that’s the point – as with life, the beauty is in the journey. Worth it for the lawyer’s closing argument alone; eight minutes of intense cinema.

Perfect for: Anyone who loves a great courtroom drama and you’re ok with subtitles (I know some folks aren’t and that’s sort of ok). Also if you like French movies because this one has a fair share of French-ness.

Where to watch: As of this writing it’s included with Amazon Prime, nice bonus.

Food pairing: A nice plate of charcuterie, cornichons, and baguette; and some crème brûlée if you really want to go for it.
