“Perfumes”

My Rating: 3.76/4 (aka A warm, elegant watch)

One line summary: A story of a perfumer who loses her sense of smell.

The Deets: There are a handful of actors who I will watch no matter what, even if the subject matter isn’t at the top of my list – the French actress Emanuelle Devos is one of those (Virginie Efira, Laure Calamy, and Charlotte Gainsbourg are three more). This is one of those perfectly French films with very few characters and a simple plot that finds its way to elevate you as you watch it. Devos leads as high-class, eccentric perfumer Anne Walberg, and she meets a new chauffeur who is struggling to stabilize his life. Of course you know what will happen, but you don’t know how – and like life, the journey is the thing; in this story, both characters end up better and more evolved at the end. And for that it’s worth watching for the how.

Perfect for: If you love watching Devos, and also if you enjoy character-driven French dramas laced with a bit of humor. IYKYK.

Where to watch: As of this writing it’s included with Amazon Prime!

Food pairing: Definitely some cheese, and definitely some wine or the closest thing.
