“Sharper”

My Rating: 3.74/4 (aka Totally worth it)

One line summary: The interwoven stories of a bunch of a highly distrustful characters.

The Deets: Don’t be fooled by the trailer – this is a solid, old-fashioned con movie. It doesn’t hold a candle to the king of all con movies – “The Sting” – but that’s an impossible measuring stick. Instead, it’s right up there with the Will Smith flick “Focus,” which I also enjoyed immensely. The narrative structure is a straight rip / influence of Tarantino (you will notice the homage to “Pulp Fiction” and a love of movies in general). And I loved the pace – it eases you in, doesn’t rush things, and you think you know where it’s going just enough, that you know the characters and their motivations, and then it slips you into a new realm; I was genuinely, out loud shocked by the first big reveal. I hope you will be, too, because it will be much more fun to let yourself get sucked in without expecting much more.

Perfect for: Anyone who enjoys a good con film because you’re just looking for some weekend fun.

Where to watch: Apple TV.

Food pairing: No idea why, but I am feeling calamari with a basil aioli.
