My Rating: 3.89/4 (aka A beautiful film you should see)
One line summary: The melancholic story of a school bus crash and its aftermath.
The Deets: As I scrolled back through the list of memorable movies that I wanted to share, this one popped out – on the spectrum of memorable, it is way up there, and when I looked to see that it was released in 1997, I was kinda surprised, feels like a long time ago. But if you can find it and watch it, then I suspect it will change something in you. This is a luminous, textured, and deep (somewhere dark) movie by underrated Canadian director Atom Egoyan, who also made the excellent and mysterious “Exotica” from 1994, and then more than a dozen films since. Time to get back on this train. Very early Sarah Polley and a superb Ian Holm (who is also great in Stanley Tucci’s “Big Night”). This is a movie that will stick with you long after the credits, and I can still recall the essence of it, as well as many of the visceral images and moments thirty years later, the sun shining off the whitest of snow in the remote Canadian mountains.
Perfect for: If you already enjoy the work of Atom Egoyan, and if you’re in the mood for a sad but stunningly deep film.
Where to watch: Unfortunately I could only find it at Fawesome.tv, which I have never used. Let me know if it works for you. Or you can buy the DVD.
Food pairing: Just some hot tea with milk.
