“The Little Drummer Girl”

My Rating: 3.87/4 (aka Very likely worth your time)

One line summary: Mossad recruits a British actress to infiltrate a Palestinian terror cell.

The Deets: I can’t believe I was so late to this game! But my contention is that – similar to the excellent and terribly named “Halt and Catch Fire” – this short series suffers from a title (admittedly taken from the John Le Carre book) that doesn’t tell the watcher anything about it. But the 95% Rotten Tomatoes score pulled me in, and I am so glad for that. This is a fantastic watch, but you have to like your shows set in the 1970s; it is decidedly not modern or fast-paced, and that’s a wonderful thing in this case. Florence Pugh in the lead role is absolutely divine, and you can’t take your eyes off her. And the Israeli Mossad cast is also strong and very believable. Here’s the kicker – it’s directed by Korean filmmaker Park Chan-Wook, whose “No Other Choice” I just wrote about recently. And no surprise, the texture and cinematic quality here are sublime, and yet perfectly aligned to the material and subject matter, brilliantly told, especially in the scenes where the patient Alexander Skaarsgard is training Pugh’s “Charlie” to navigate her way as a spy. Great watch.

Perfect for: If you love anything spy-related, as we do, and if you also enjoy a slower pace filled with tension and great acting.

Where to watch: You will need to pay for it via AMC, AcornTV, or Prime. I will contend it’s very worth it, and watchable in 2-3 sessions.

Food pairing: You will need multiple snacks over multiple days, so get creative – maybe biscuits with jam one day and a fruit bowl the next.
