My Rating: 3.78/4 (aka Definitely worth your time)
One line summary: A middle-aged actor and recent grad meet in a Tokyo hotel.
The Deets: I am actually writing this from the bullet train between Kyoto and Tokyo, so kind of a special moment for me. Hard to believe Scarlett Johansson was 17 when she made this film, and in the same year (2003) as “Girl with a Pearl Earring.” She was officially a movie star hereafter. This was also the launch of Bill Murray’s second or third act, and he was narrowly edged for the best actor Oscar by Sean Penn in “Mystic River.” I probably go with Murray because his performance is more nuanced. Sofia Coppola wins for best screenplay and directs, and her influences are on display and literally on screen – Bertolucci, Godard, and her dear old dad. Having just visited Tokyo and then Kyoto, I would say she captures the essence well; the movie’s vibe holds up and the leads are strong. It’s funny to see flip phones and fax machines, but these are minor details in a movie that’s rewatchable and memorable more than 20 years later. I had remembered the last scene differently, and was pleasantly surprised to experience it again. Just on the verge of a cliche but not quite.
Perfect for: If you’re in the mood for a moody movie that flows nicely, if you’re pining for some Tokyo vibes, and especially if you want to watch some excellent chemistry between Murray and a very young Johansson.
Where to watch: You can rent it on Amazon Prime or Apple TV. If you haven’t seen it, you won’t regret it.
Food pairing: A glass of Suntory whiskey, of course, but more likely an egg sando from 7-11 in Tokyo; it’s worth the journey.
