It’s supposedly based on a Balzac short story about an older artist who returns to a painting that he abandoned many years prior. While it won’t appeal to everyone, this is an absolute masterwork from French director Jacques Rivette. The acting by all is both subtle and sublime, and this is basically a perfect movie – in its depth, its ideas, and its meditation on art, creation, and life.
