“After the Storm”

My Rating: 3.86/4 (aka Almost Great)

One line summary: A once-great novelist who now gambles too much attempts to connect with his son.

The Deets: What do they say about pizza? Even when it’s bad, it’s still pretty good. Well, this film from one of my favorite directors (Kore-ada, see “Broker” and “Shoplifters”) is not at all bad – it’s just not one of his greats — and it’s still better than most movies you’ll see this year. As with all of his films, the story is simple and revolves around the dynamics of family (and the repeated refrain from several characters is something along the lines of “my life wasn’t supposed to end up this way”). As another typhoon approaches, we observe the closely detailed and intimate interactions of the family unfold, waiting waiting for what will happen… after the storm.

Where to watch: You gotta rent it, and I will be surprised if you regret the two-hour time investment.

Perfect for: A contemplative evening, a gray Saturday afternoon, and anyone who loves the films of the great Kore-ada.

Food pairing: Japanese snacks, your choice. Sushi can work too, or noodles (but that might get messy).
