My Rating: 3.93/4 (aka Must See)
One line summary: The amazing true story of Jean-Marie Lustiger, who maintains his Jewish identity even after converting to Catholicism and rising in the ranks of the priesthood.
The Deets: This film was not at all what I expected when it was recommended to me; I thought it would be slow and pensive, but it has a deep, driving energy, and Laurent Lucas in the lead role is absolutely perfect (I first saw him many years ago in the excellent “With a Friend Like Harry”). Israeli director Ilan Duran Cohen strikes just the right balance of tone, navigating some very complex themes of identity and the Holocaust across the key years of Lustiger’s ascent as a priest. It is a beautiful portrait of a man with deep conviction, who brings his passion and persistence to his every day of living, and it’s a joy to behold for the audience.
Perfect for: An evening when you’re seeking an elevated and intelligent film without the sheen of sentimentality.
Where to watch: You gotta rent it, and you really should, thank me later.
Food pairing: Something French and holy; probably some nice cheese and crackers, and definitely a bold red wine.
