“Margin Call”

My Rating: 3.83/4 (aka Worth your time)

One line summary: An inside look at a Wall Street firm on the brink of collapse in 2008.

The Deets: How did writer/director JC Chandor attract this powerhouse cast and film this movie in 17 days? I genuinely don’t know. Tucci, Quinto, Demi Moore, Jeremy Irons, Paul Bettany, Simon Baker, and Spacey (before he was cancelled) – wow. When Tucci is fired and Quinto the “quant” uncovers a massive financial risk for the firm, the executives attempt to resolve the situation. This movie runs a brisk hour 47, and the script is sharp, honest, and brings out the best in each actor (how come Paul Bettany isn’t in more stuff?). You’re not left feeling joyful at the end, but that isn’t the point. As with Chandor’s other solid work (“Triple Frontier” “A Most Violent Year” “All is Lost”) – he has worked with the best actors out there, including Chastain, Isaac, and Redford, and all of his stories are laced with a strong moral layer that asks us to examine ourselves in the process.

Perfect for: If you know and already enjoy the films of JC Chandor, if you’re into a character drama with some great acting, and if you missed this one and want to relive the 2008 financial crisis.

Where to watch: You missed it on Netflix, so now you’ll need to rent or watch with ads.

Food pairing: Feels like some New York style pizza would go very well with this one, maybe even a whole pie.
