“The Killer”

My Rating: 3.23/4 (aka Only because it’s on Netflix)

One line summary: A methodical contract killer slips up, and then unleashes a trail of revenge.

The Deets: Sometimes my rating reflects the fact that my high expectations or excitement are not met. This is one of those films. Did I walk out? Not at all (I was on a plane, so that wasn’t really an option), and I did watch all the way to the lackluster ending. But come on, this is a David Fincher film, we are entitled to have high expectations for the auteur who brought us “Seven” and “The Social Network.” And while Michael Fassbender is very good in the lead role, his voiceover is drab, and it seems that we’re supposed to care about the action that unfolds, but we don’t (or at least I didn’t). Sure the filmmaking is precise, mirroring its lead, but the movie’s self-importance is too obvious and it lacks any real depth (especially compared to the intensity and subtleties of “Seven”). Was barely worth the $8 I paid for wifi.

Perfect for: If you’re in the mood for an assassin flick that’s just entertaining enough.

Where to watch: It’s on Netflix, so there’s that (but “NYAD” is a better bet).

Food pairing: Something from McDonald’s.
