My Rating: 3.86/4
One line summary: Despite an accident, a longtime group of friends gather for their annual summer vacation together.
The Deets: Since it’s Memorial Day weekend in the US, I decided to be thematic and choose a great “vacation” movie. You could probably write a whole book about French films that take place in summer homes (I can think of five without blinking), and it is a divine setting, especially for dialogue-driven movies. The French title of this one – “Les Petits Mouchoirs” – refers to an idiomatic expression that is similar to the English notion of “sweeping something under the rug,” which makes more sense once you see it. Directed by actor-director Guillaume Canet (who has made some of my other favorites), this movie is overflowing with French all-stars, and watching them act together is a true treat. I have no idea why the Rotten Tomatoes score is so low because it hits all the notes, and does so with surprise, humor, and authenticity. It does go over the top a bit, but that’s all part of its charm. And I think it was so popular that they made a part two sequel that I haven’t seen; but I doubt it holds up after the explosive first one. Just go along for the ride.
Perfect for: If you enjoy the sub-genre of French films in summer homes, and especially if you also like ensemble dramas.
Where to watch: This is the downside – I cannot find it on streaming, so hopefully it comes back or you can watch it in your non-US location (let me know if you have it!). Or maybe you have a DVD player.
Food pairing: You must align to the vibe and open a bottle of Rose wine paired with some fruits (probably grapes) and cheeses. Crackers optional.
