“A Taste of Hunger”

My Rating: 3.88/4 (aka Definitely worth it)

One line summary: A Danish couple pursues their dream of a Michelin star.

The Deets: Well this one was a surprise. A beautiful movie with beautiful people in beautiful settings filled with perfectly prepared food – what’s not to like? I had never seen a film by Mr. Boe, and it seems (based on his filmography) that this is a more mature movie for him, much deeper and free of violence. Because this is a film about love, about pursuing a dream, about the strength of family, and ultimately, the portrait of a marriage. The cinematography is incredible (kudos to Manuel Alberto Claro), with luscious hues of purple and blue and red washing over chiseled faces. I want to watch it again just to take in the color palette a second time. And the story is told through a series of vignettes, which are named by taste and out of linear order, leaving us to piece it all together, much like life.

Perfect for: If you love a good foodie film, and if you enjoy the subtleties of a European movie, especially from the Nordics.

Where to watch: You can stream it on Hulu! Or rent it elsewhere.

Food pairing: Definitely a hot dog; you choose how fancy you want it.
