“The Innocent”

My Rating: 3.82/4 (aka Great watch)

One line summary: Abel learns that his mother is going to marry an ex-con.

The Deets: It’s clear that Louis Garrel has spent his life around movies – he seems to have found a tone and style that suits him, playful and wise. He is also kind of unfairly handsome, especially with his perfectly unkempt hair flowing in the Parisian breeze. Oh did I forget to mention that he wrote, directed, and starred in this delightful film? He did. He also blends together multiple genres – familial drama, comedy, and heist – into a seamless catchy narrative that reeks of originality. Noemie Merlant (who you may have seen as the assistant in “Tar”) is fantastic as Abel’s sidekick best friend, and their chemistry is spot on. A truly wonderful and messy love story.

Perfect for: If you enjoy French concoctions that don’t say it all and still have fun along the way. Also if you already like Louis Garrel’s work, and what’s not to like?

Where to watch: Definitely one to rent on Amazon Prime, worth the $3.99 x 2. Not to be confused with “The Innocent” series on Netflix, which is also a great watch for many other reasons.

Food pairing: A small meal, perhaps a skirt steak, salad, and red wine, of course, to strike the mood. Or caviar.
