“Monster”

My Rating: 3.96/4 (aka Must watch)

One line summary: Three perspectives on a young boy’s behavior.

The Deets: It seems to be that Hirokazu Koreeda can only make brilliant movies. This one is interesting because he didn’t write it, compared to most of his others – “Shoplifters” “Broker” “The Third Murder” and “Like Father Like Son.” He also tells this story in a most lyrical way, weaving together three perspectives into a tapestry that leaves you nearly breathless at the end. He always explores the theme of family, and he has conjured up some of the most magical performances by child actors I’ve ever seen. And somehow he continues to grow his expanse; I am still thinking about this one the next morning. Just wow. Queue it up immediately and soak it in.

Perfect for: If you already love the films of Koreeda, and also if you’re in the mood for a beautiful poem of a movie in Japanese.

Where to watch: You can rent it on your favorite streaming space and you must.

Food pairing: Something with noodles.
