My Rating: 3.91/4 (aka Must see indie)
One line summary: A newly married couple visit the husband’s Southern family in search of an eclectic artist.
The Deets: This movie kind of comes out of nowhere and sticks inside of you. It has this incredible original and surprising texture, totally authentic and humble, just allowing these actors to exist in a series of moments, feeling all the emotions that come with life. There are hilarious scenes, painfully awkward ones, romantic ones, and beautiful depth. Oh, and they filmed it all in 21 days. Amy Adams is brilliant as the pregnant Ashley, and with her supporting actress Oscar nomination, she was firmly on the map. The simultaneous simple presence that she portrays is magical. There is a rare richness here, and when it ends you will wish that there were more movies like this.
Perfect for: When you’re in the mood for a layered, emotional, and awkwardly funny film that feels small in scope but expands as it unfolds.
Where to watch: You can rent it on your favorite streaming service. Don’t mistake it for the series of the same name, this one is from 2005.
Food pairing: Something southern, perhaps ribs and cole slaw, or just the cornbread.
