“Black Bag”

My Rating: 3.72/4 (aka Worth your time)

One line summary: A spy / assassin couple have their marriage tested by outside forces.

The Deets: One of my all-time favorite fun movies is “Oceans Twelve” — you kinda just want to hang out with the cast, which we do in the very last scene, and you can tell they’re all just having fun. This is the latest from prolific and distinct director Steven Soderbergh, who has somehow been able to toe the line between the interesting indie and the film with more mass appeal — some of his works just need popcorn, some have a moral message (the excellent “Traffic,” the Oscar-winning “Erin Brockovich,” and the solid “Side Effects”), and some are wonderfully stylistic, fun rides that you can appreciate for their craft, great acting, and twistyness – “Out of Sight,” “Haywire,” and this one fall in that last category. And I mean, come on, if you get Cate Blanchett and Michael Fassbender cast as your leading couple, how hard can it be to make a fabulously fun movie? “Black Bag” won’t blow you away, but you should leave satisfied, complete with the Soderbergh style – basked in warm light, crisp dialogue, and just enough of a thrill to hold you.

Perfect for: If you’re already a Soderbergh fan, you’re in the mood for a fun spy thriller, or if you can’t decide what to see at the theatre this weekend.

Where to watch: For now it’s only in theatres, but soon to hit your favorite streaming platform for sure.

Food pairing: Chicken wings, side of ranch dressing.
