“La Danse”

My Rating: 3.88/4 (aka Definitely worth it if you enjoy ballet)

One line summary: The elegant Frederick Wiseman documentary about the Paris Opera Ballet.

The Deets: I was introduced to the films of Wiseman somewhat recently, and that’s unfortunate because I love his “fly on the wall” style, and after I heard “Brutalist” director Brady Corbet say that he was the greatest American filmmaker, I paid even more attention. We saw this one at a local theatre, as many of his works are not available on streaming. There is no real plot or narrative story to tell – you watch these professionals practice and prepare their craft; and in this case it’s the Paris Opera Ballet and all of the people who support putting on a show. You are in the room with them and that is the experience. I love dance and so this was magical, if even just a little bit long (but it’s Wiseman so you know what you’re getting into).

Perfect for: Wiseman lovers, first and foremost; ballet lovers secondarily; and curious watchers coming in third.

Where to watch: There is another doc called “The Paris Opera Ballet,” but it’s not the same. I can’t find this one on streaming, so be on the lookout. Some of Wiseman’s other films are available, including an epic 6-hour one about a famous French restaurant in countryside.

Food pairing: Feels like a quiche Lorraine.
