“The Godfather”

My Rating: 3.99/4 (aka Just yes)

One line summary: The legendary story of the Corleone family and the passage from patriarch to reluctant son.

The Deets: This one seemed appropriate for Father’s Day, and – like its sequel – is pretty much perfect in every way: the supreme acting, the gorgeous cinematography, the transformation of the characters, the unforgettable music. You could watch this over and over, and each time you would notice something new and subtle, like the brilliance of Brando, the restraint of Duvall, and the nuanced evolution of Pacino. Some critics don’t love Keaton’s portrayal of Kay, but I disagree – from the first wedding scene to the final moment of the door closing, this is simply a master at work in Coppola, and it deserves every bit of adulation it receives. They don’t make them like this anymore and they may never again.

Perfect for: If you love grand epics, centered on the family. You just need to watch this film at least once in your life even if the mafia isn’t your jam.

Where to watch: You can rent it across the streaming universe.

Food pairing: Bowl of pasta, wine optional.
