“The Investigation”

My Rating: 3.86/4 (aka Definitely worth it)

One line summary: The meticulous investigation of the mysterious death of journalist Kim Wall.

The Deets: This is another true crime miniseries that watches like a long movie, similar to the excellent “Helicopter Heist” but with a much slower pace. It takes place in Copenhagen, and it is washed in gray, just like the city and the subject matter of this work. It is also not binge-worthy; I think you need to take your time with this watch, just as the actual investigation stretches on for months as the lead detective and prosecutor seek the evidence to make a convincing case to convict the accused in custody. If you’ve seen the fantastic Danish series “Borgen” on Netflix, you will recognize the two male leads, and they are both great in their roles – navigating the emotional waves of their families and the parents of the victim. Don’t expect much relief when it ends, but as the camera follows its subjects throughout, we feel invested in solving the crime, and we just hope the road leads to a conclusive end.

Perfect for: If you like Danish films, true crime, and the slow, patient burn of solving a murder.

Where to watch: It’s on HBO, so you need to subscribe or rent it via Amazon Prime.

Food pairing: Some seafood could go well as you watch this over a few days or weeks, and you may need some white wine, too.
