One line summary: Jacob oversees an orphanage in India, and when he returns to Denmark seeking funding, the past returns in a tsunami.

The Deets: This film is a powerhouse. It takes place mostly in Copenhagen and on the palatial estate where the wedding (of the title) occurs; and the early scenes in India are both raw and gentle. Susanne Bier’s directing is stunning. It’s also a tough one to put into words, to describe the emotional gravity, and mostly the camera does the talking, staying close and holding you there (and it was so good that they made an American version). Definitely one of the best films I’ve seen in recent years.

Perfect for: Anyone who likes family drama, if you’re into the Dogme 95 style, and if you enjoy watching Mads Mikkelsen (like I do).

Where to watch: You need to rent it, and make sure it’s the original from 2007.
