“Air”

My Rating: 3.86/4 (aka Fun and Worth It)

One line summary: Before Nike was huge, they had to convince Michael Jordan to sign with them. This is how they did it.

The Deets: This was our first film in the theater in a long time, and it was totally worth it (though not because the movie is especially cinematic, but the 80s soundtrack is obviously spot on). And, that guy Affleck had some fun with this one – he has really figured out how to tell a great story with the right texture, humor, and pacing (and he’s quite good as the enigmatic Phil Knight); we know what’s going to happen but we don’t know how, and that’s what drives the story. Matt Damon nails his role; he’s basically in every scene, and his passion makes the movie go: You are left with a deep appreciation for how Nike rose to prominence in the (basketball) world, and it was because of passion, belief, taking risks, and – above all – human connection. And for a basketball lover like me, it was all gravy to relive the creation of the Air Jordan, which I wore in middle school. Those were the days.

Perfect for: Definitely anyone who loves basketball, if you read “Shoe Dog,” and if you grew up in the eighties. If you don’t enjoy this one, I will give you your money back.

Where to watch: Included with (Amazon) Prime! (Just do it. Yes, I just did that.)

Food pairing: Probably a plate full of loaded nachos. And an orange Fanta.
