My Rating: 3.98/4 (aka Absolutely must see)
One line summary: In the French mountains, a wife is accused of murdering her husband.
The Deets: This is a masterpiece from French director Justine Triet. And the Oscar-worthy lead performance from German actress Sandra Huller (star of the brilliant “Toni Erdmann”) is one of the best I’ve seen in a very long time. After their blind son finds his father dead outside their Grenoble home, it is the German writer wife who becomes the prime suspect — is it an accident or murder? The story unfolds intensely, the camera stays tight on its subjects, and you know you’re in the hands of a narrative genius, in script and screen. Hard to find a false note in this film as we hurtle in the snow towards an uncertain conclusion, and especially through the electric courtroom scenes, awaiting the verdict, hoping for absolution for ourselves.
Perfect for: Anyone who loves a beautiful and complex movie, and if you enjoy deep character dramas.
Where to watch: It’s still in some theaters and will hopefully be streaming soon (definitely if it wins an Oscar or two).
Food pairing: Going to go with a big bowl of plain pasta with butter and cheese, just keep it simple. And red wine, of course.
