My Rating: 3.98/4
One line summary: Two men attempt to broker the sale of a baby who has been abandoned by his mother.
The Deets: After the excellent “Shoplifters” a few years ago, we have watched at least three more films by the wise and beautiful filmmaker, Hirokazu Kore-eda; each of them has revealed another layer of his depth, as well as his desire to explore the dynamics of family, challenging our perceptions and feelings with each turn and gorgeous shot. His newest work “Broker” begins at night with an air of mystery, and it unfolds as a road trip movie, a brilliantly ambiguous take on family and love, and leaves us wishing to be with his characters for many more hours or days.
Perfect for: Anyone who already loves the films of Kore-ada, and if you’re in the mood for a deep, wonderful story of what it means to be a family.
Where to watch: You need to rent it, and you really should – if you love the art of cinema.
