My Rating: 3.87/4 (aka Definitely watch it)
One line summary: A restaurant chef in a creative rut opens a food truck to try and get his mojo back, in the kitchen and with his son.
The Deets: I love movies about food. And when I was deciding which movie to write about today, I was kinda shocked that I hadn’t reviewed this one, both because it’s about food and I’ve seen it at least five times, probably more. There’s not a ton of depth here, but that’s not what Favreau is going for; he wants relatability and he gets it. I’ve enjoyed most of his indie style work ever since “Swingers,” and even though his Twitter references here have aged a bit, it still works. It’s also shocking to see the amazing cast of characters here — Johansson, Dustin Hoffman, Oliver Platt, and Robert Downey Jr in a brilliantly hilarious cameo; Leguizamo nails it, as does the underrated Bobby Cannavale. The only thing you may question is how Sophia Vergara ever got together with Carl Casper. Bit of a stretch, but it’s a movie so we just roll with it. And it’s totally rewatchable.
Perfect for: If you love food movies like me, you need something that will go down easy, making you laugh, salivate, and say awwww a few times.
Where to watch: You gotta rent it, and you can do that on Amazon Prime for the cool price of $3.59.
Food pairing: Wait for it… gotta go with the grilled cheese.
