“Coup de Chance”

My Rating: 3.54/4 (aka Almost worth your time)

One line summary: A French affair unfolds with a slightly surprising outcome.

The Deets: There was a time when I thought Woody Allen was one of the greatest filmmakers ever. After Manhattan, Annie Hall, Sleeper, and Crimes and Misdemeanors, it would be hard to argue. So with this movie, his FIFTIETH, we decided why not? And for a light evening, it was just the confection that we desired – no depth, some well-done shots of humor, and just enough suspense to keep you wondering how it will end. Certainly not a masterwork, but it doesn’t try to be, and it’s way better than some of the others (Small Time Crooks). But it did make me yearn for his long-ago great films, which captured the nuance of human relationships maybe better than anyone.

Perfect for: When you want a movie in French that is just the icing, no cake. And at a tidy 96 minutes, it goes down easy.

Where to watch: You can rent on your favorite streaming service, and you probably won’t regret it.

Food pairing: A nice burgundy and a comte cheese, sip slowly.
