My Rating: 3.79/4 (aka Super fun watch)
One line summary: In the afterlife, Joan must decide who will be her partner for eternity.
The Deets: Just when I thought Hollywood didn’t know how to make smart romcoms with just enough depth to not be shallow, along came this movie, which has a throwback feel, not a mobile device in sight, just some good old-fashioned romance. And the whole film is driven by the ultimate choice: Who will the wonderful Joan choose as her partner for eternity? We saw the trailer numerous times in theatres before we watched it, so we pretty much knew the premise – the key, then, was would it bring anything unexpected to capture some deeper intrigue or truth. Spoiler alert, it does, and I awoke the next morning with a satisfying feeling – not just that the ending makes you feel good, but that it felt earned. For a story that could have veered into bland, this one keeps you guessing just enough and lands you softly, right where you want to be.
Perfect for: When you’re in the mood for a great romcom, and especially if you want to see Miles Teller and Callum Turner wrestle.
Where to watch: As of this writing, you can still catch it in some theatres, or you need to rent it on streaming for a hefty price. Either way I suspect you won’t be disappointed.
Food pairing: I am feeling Chinese food for this one, potentially right out of the takeout container.
