“Everything Went Fine”

My Rating: 3.92/4 (aka Wrenching)

One line summary: A father suffers a stroke and asks his older daughter to help him die.

The Deets: Well, this one was tough, and if I had watched the full trailer before buying tickets, we would have gone to see “Air” instead. Not because the film isn’t brilliantly and soberly crafted, but because of the weight of the subject matter (and it hit way too close). But with all of that said, I will still see anything that French director Francois Ozon puts out (“Under the Sand,” “Frantz,” and “Swimming Pool” are three favorites), and that’s what led us to this one — a raw, incredibly well-acted story that’s probably all too familiar for many families. And in the hands of Ozon — his tight camera, deft editing, and soft touch — you are left gutted, emotionally exhausted, somewhat relieved, and feeling as if you’ve truly been with this family for the last two hours.

Perfect for: I’m actually not sure, you need to be in the mood for an emotional gut punch.

Where to watch: As of April 2023, I think it’s only in theaters.

Food pairing: Red wine (a lot of it) and a baguette, as the French do.
