My Rating: 3.92/4 (aka Must see)
One line summary: Ray Kinsella chases his dream and discovers his healing.
The Deets: Since it’s baseball season, I decided to go with a classic, and my favorite baseball movie (even though this is more of a family film, or a hero’s journey). I’ve seen this many times, so I didn’t need to rewatch it to be reminded that I cry at the end every time. And that I anticipate key moments when I know I will feel the brilliant weight of the direction – and the underrated score from the masterful James Horner – come crashing through the screen. Kevin Costner, say what you will, is probably the only guy who could play the lead role, especially at this moment in his career (1989) – he is also totally natural throwing a baseball. And even though the late Ray Liotta (as “Shoeless” Joe Jackson) is not, he, James Earl Jones, and the immortal Burt Lancaster bring their expected gravitas; only Amy Madigan feels a little overdone, but we can let that casting error slide. Ultimately, this is a story about how baseball is really an allegory for life, how it gives you second chances, can fulfill your dreams, and even soothe the soul, if you let it.
Perfect for: If you love or have ever played baseball and know its magic, and if you’re in the mood for a movie with no cellphones.
Where to watch: Included with Amazon Prime streaming for 13 more days!
Food pairing: At least 2 hot dogs, condiments of your choice.
