“Foxtrot”

My Rating: 3.88/4 (aka Must see)

One line summary: An Israeli family confronts the grief of a loss.

The Deets: This is a tough film. It is anchored by the excellent and seemingly omnipresent Israeli actor Lior Ashkenazi, who is also great in “Footnote” (2011); this movie is six years later – you feel his maturity, and both his physical size and the heft of his emotions seem to take up every frame that he occupies. The action jumps to a part comedic, part commentary, part dreamlike creation on a remote Israeli army base. Samuel Maoz the writer/director may be offering a sharp critique of Israeli life, but he also sets an authentic tone, laced with dialogue as sparse as the furniture. But what we come to know/remember is that our actions, reactions, and the slightest of looks can overpower our words. And sometimes we are left speechless.

Perfect for: If you want a movie that will make you feel all over, and especially if you enjoy the texture of an Israeli film.

Where to watch: You can rent it on Amazon Prime, and I recommend that you do.

Food pairing: Hummus and (warm) pita.
