My Rating: 3.82/4 (aka Worth your time)
One line summary: An Afghan military interpreter saves the life of an American sergeant who must then repay his debt.
The Deets: I usually don’t expect to watch great movies on planes, but this one was an exception (I also don’t like it when the director puts their possessive naming on the title of the film, but I will let this one pass). This movie really surprised me; it was definitely stylized and well-paced (as Ritchie does), but it also has raw heart, an excellent performance from the taut Jake Gyllenhal (even if he does turn it up to 11 a few times), and it doesn’t over-tell or over-dramatize, which is definitely the risk when you make a film about a war story like this. A heavy reminder of how far we will go to save another human and the power of our will.
Perfect for: Anyone who likes a solid war film with heart, and especially if you like to watch Jake Gyllenhal on screen; he is at the center of it.
Where to watch: You need to rent it on streaming (or catch it on your next Delta flight).
Food pairing: I think a pizza would be a perfect companion for this one.
