My Rating: 3.72/4 (aka Not for everyone)
One line summary: A magical tale of Italian archaeologists seek to unearth valuable artifacts.
The Deets: La chimera translates to “the impossible dream,” and that is exactly what Alice Rohrwacher’s new film feels like — you watch it and it’s almost like you’re suspended in a mystery. With a deep homage to Fellini, we are thrust into a totally abstract movie, with a rough sense of plot and character, but really it makes you feel like you’re dreaming. You don’t really know who the characters are or how they know each other, you don’t know where you are exactly – and that’s not the point. You are on an underground adventure with the band of bandits, led by Josh O’Connor, who is oddly cast and yet perfect in the role. I can’t promise you will enjoy this one, but if you go in with an open mind, it will whisk you away, just keep pulling the red string.
Perfect for: Lovers of Italian cinema, especially if you want to be whisked away into a dream.
Where to watch: You need to rent it on streaming, and once you commit, you won’t regret it.
Food pairing: Some crusty bread and your choice of accompaniments.
