My Rating: 3.89/4 (aka Must see)
One line summary: A mother is caught between her two families.
The Deets: Oh you must see this one. And I think I need to re-watch it, especially with someone who hasn’t seen it so I can observe how they take it all in as the truths are revealed. There is an air of mystery and uncertainty and unease throughout, all of which are played to perfection by the divine Virginie Efira as the lead Judith. I spent half the movie trying to figure out how the puzzle pieces of the characters fit together, guessing whether Judith will be caught in her duplicity, as she delicately races back and forth between her two lives, juggling her lies, even as we don’t know why. And then we do (but I’m not going to spoil it!). A master stroke by French director Antoine Barraud; I hope he can follow it up with a next film that keeps pace.
Perfect for: Lovers of French cinema generally, and especially if you enjoy psychologically unsettling and subtle works of family drama.
Where to watch: You gotta rent it, and you obviously should.
Food pairing: Something French, probably involving a demi baguette.
