“Man on Fire”

My Rating: 3.92/4 (aka Must see)

One line summary: Denzel enacts vengeance for a kidnapping in Mexico.

The Deets: Just re-watched this one on a recent flight, and no surprise, it holds up even after the tenth time; and that might be the thing about Tony Scott movies – even though he made them 20+ years ago, like this one (2004), they somehow still feel modern. With his trademark texture and jumpcut style, this is one of my all-time favorite action movies and Denzel performances. The thing that I recognized this time, is that Dakota Fanning – who was NINE during filming – gives one of the great overlooked child performances, and I put it up there with Haley Joel in “Sixth Sense.” And the chemistry between her and Denzel is quite special. And that’s the beauty of this movie – Scott doesn’t rush it, he slowly unravels the story, deepens the relationship between Lupita and Creasy, and then he takes it up 10x. Buckle up.

Perfect for: If you love watching Denzel operate, you like a good Mexico City setting, and if you’re ok with a fair bit of gruesome violence. Consider yourself warned.

Where to watch: You can rent it on Prime or subscribe to AMC.

Food pairing: Gotta go with some nachos here (though not sure why).
