My Rating: 3.68/4 (aka Probably worth it)
One line summary: A tragedy among two neighbors unravels into the sinister.
The Deets: I watched this one on a recent flight and I definitely didn’t honor what is probably a beautifully shot film by director and longtime French cinematographer Benoit Delhomme (who has a seriously long filmography). This is a character study and the two female leads in Chastain and Hathaway are excellent — and they need to be because they carry the movie, which takes place in a nameless affluent suburb in the early 1960s. Tragedy, grief, guilt, and wordless glances permeate throughout, and just when you think you know how it will end, you’re wrong. Adapted from a French novel and film, I’m curious to see that version, if only to observe the cultural differences.
Perfect for: When you want to watch a movie with superb acting and very few characters who rarely leave home.
Where to watch: You can rent it on Amazon Prime, and it will make for an uneasy and unexpected evening.
Food pairing: Some sort of hors d’oevres, or maybe just a stiff drink.
