My Rating: 3.56/4 (aka Worth it for the acting)
One line summary: A professional woman ascends in the corporate world.
The Deets: Part of my highly subjective and scientific rating system is how memorable the movie is; simply put, does it stick with me the next day (and week after)? If it does – like the vibe of Koreeda’s “Monster” – you know it’s a gem. This movie is another one starring the amazing Emanuelle Devos, and she is incapable of acting badly. She single-handedly carries this one, despite some odd casting (including her husband), but she can’t elevate it to memorable material. Is it worth it for the texture and well-paced narrative that allow us to see Devos in top form, navigating amidst the corporate culture of men? Yes, for sure. But will you be enthralled a week later? Probably not. But as Butch says in one of my all time favorites – “just as long as we come out ahead.” And you do come out ahead.
Perfect for: If you love to watch anything with Devos, as I do, or if you want to start watching her.
Where to watch: You need to get in on the France Channel through Prime.
Food pairing: Sushi and sake should work well.
