My Rating: 3.72/4 (aka Definitely worth your time)
One line summary: A portrait of Naples as told through the life of the beauty Parthenope.
The Deets: There are some directors whose movies I will always see even if the reviews aren’t great and Paolo Sorrentino is one them. After his last one “Hand of God,” which is an absolute masterpiece (and semi-autobiographical), and then “The Great Beauty,” his newest, the divine “Parthenope” is not what it seems if you just watch the trailer. Ignore the RT score and let yourself be immersed in the magical storytelling that is Sorrentino’s trademark. This is a film that is wise, youthful, silly, shocking, sad, and humorous — all at the same time and at once. The acting is both classy and timeless, and the brief turn by Gary Oldman as a famous American writer is a wonderful touch and homage to inspiration. Hopefully you emerge knowing the true definition of Anthropology.
Perfect for: Anyone who already loves the films of Sorrentino and is ready for his next one; and also if you’re in the mood for something lyrically Italian.
Where to watch: As of today (Feb 16) it’s still only in theaters, which is where it belongs.
Food pairing: Shellfish.
