My Rating: 3.88/4 (aka Must see)
One line summary: Two Israeli sisters uncover a dark secret about their family.
The Deets: Avi Nesher is one of the most original and important storytellers working in Israeli cinema (his “The Other Story” is excellent and I highly recommend. This is a beautiful, dark, and complex story set in 1977 Israel; it’s about our pasts and our many relationships — especially those within our family (invariably the most complex we have). The acting here is sublime, especially the youthful Joy Rieger; we can’t take our eyes off her, fragile and perfectly pitched. And as we learn the layers of this family, and the secrets their Holocaust survivor parents are holding, we come to terms with their history and perhaps our own.
Perfect for: This moment, to celebrate the amazing art that Israel creates.
Where to watch: You can pay to rent it or watch it with ads on Freevee.
Food pairing: A chopped Israeli salad with a side of hummus, sprinkled with paprika.
