My Rating: 3.82/4 (aka Worth your time)
One line summary: Alejandro comes to NYC from El Salvador and navigates his American Dream.
The Deets: I didn’t know Julio Torres before this movie, but now I follow him because he’s made (and starred in!) a surprisingly original, funny, quirky, inventive, and totally worthwhile movie with a strong and honest lesson within it. When we left the theater, we were actually surprised that the film got made at all because it’s filled with so much quirk it might not appeal to mass audiences. But you should definitely see it because the story of Alejandro is a real one, a kid with a dream, who must tread water and grow his courage so he can stay for his chance at permanent residence. And you should see it for the fierce and hilarious Tilda Swinton, who steals every scene she’s in.
Perfect for: If you’re already a Julio Torres fan, you love the work of Tilda Swinton, and if you’re in the mood for a quirky and creatively told story.
Where to watch: It might still be in theaters, and will soon arrive to your favorite streaming service.
Food pairing: A goat cheese salad, maybe with some beets and pecans.
