“Rear Window”

My Rating: 3.93/4 (aka A near perfect picture)

One line summary: A photographer with a broken leg becomes obsessed with his mysterious neighbor.

The Deets: I am in a nostalgic state of mind, so let’s throw in a throwback this week – other than “Psycho,” this might be Hitchcock’s best film, stunning to watch and it basically takes place in a single room! (How did this guy never win for best director? Travesty.) So many delightful themes here, including the obvious but central “spying on other people’s lives” – almost prophetic from 70 years ago. Jimmy Stewart is excellent as always in gripping us in his obsession and anxiety. And the moment when Grace Kelly enters the screen, you’re simply transfixed. The only thing that’s tough to understand is how these two met… not sure an algorithm would have matched them. And despite the fact that nothing will beat the first time, you can watch this over and over, noticing some new detail or moment each time that reminds us why Hitch was such a master.

Perfect for: Anyone who loves a good Hitchcock, and this one delivers the suspense! Also if you’re in the mood for a classic 1950s thriller, the trademark pacing and stunning coloration.

Where to watch: You can rent it on Amazon Prime or Apple TV. Stream away!

Food pairing: Crackers and cheese and a side of popcorn because you’ll be sucked in.
