My Rating: 3.89/4 (aka Very fun watch)
One line summary: A man uses the little-known public relay communications service to secretly help broker corporate negotiations.
The Deets: I can kinda see why this film didn’t last very long in theaters, but I wish I had been quick enough to catch it (because I love movies in the theater). They don’t make movies like this anymore – well-paced, smart, modern thrillers that don’t overly rely on technology to do the work; instead, this is a total throwback because the mystery man broker protagonist uses the actual relay communications service for the hard of hearing to stay in touch with his clients without detection. As soon as I saw it was directed by David Mackenzie, I was in because I love his “Hell or High Water” and knew this follow-on would be sharp – and it is. Somehow it lacks that extra punch; the star acting power of Chris Pine / Ben Foster / Jeff Bridges from HOHW is tough to follow, and while Riz Ahmed blends right in, it never hits that upper level. Totally worth renting or your money back. Also the best ongoing advertisement for using the USPS ever.
Perfect for: If you love a good thriller, nuff said.
Where to watch: I rented on Apple TV for $15, and it’s not yet on Prime, so either pony up because it’s worth it or be patient.
Food pairing: This is one where you don’t want distractions because the details and disguises matter; go with popcorn or a bowl of ice cream (mocha chip) like I did – can’t miss.
