My Rating: 3.73/4 (aka Totally worth it)
One line summary: Ben’s attempts to navigate his (romantic) life amidst his shortcomings.
The Deets: This was a solid plane watch; it toes the line of political correctness, humor, wit, and fun watchability. And it even has some great moments that made me laugh out loud. It’s trying, but it’s also self-aware in its trying, and so it doesn’t try too hard to be too deep, following its mostly likable cast of characters from the Bay Area (seemingly Oakland) to NYC, where the real magic happens. As the title suggests, and not so subtly, Ben has some pretty pronounced shortcomings that we learn about right away – and then we discover that we all have shortcomings to overcome. And then we kinda feel better about it all, as long as we keep trying to introspect and improve.
Perfect for: If you’re into those smart and worthwhile indie films that try to bring the audience to a place of wiser understanding about the world and our relationships.
Where to watch: You can rent on Amazon Prime, and I think you’ll think it’s worth it.
Food pairing: Nice big bowl of fried rice with lots of stuff in it, and maybe an egg on top.
