“Sink or Swim” (Le Grand Bain)

My Rating: 3.88/4 (aka Definitely worth it)

One line summary: Based on a true story (loosely), a depressed man joins a local men’s synchronized swimming team.

The Deets: Merci beaucoup a mon ami for the recommendation; based solely on the premise, I’m not sure we would have chosen to watch it, but I am so glad we did. Famed French actor Gilles Lellouche tries his hand behind the camera and directs this often hilarious and always full of heart film about a group of middle-aged men who form the local community synchronized swimming team, for which they receive ridicule. And despite (or because of!?) their respective life struggles, they find a place of belonging together, support each other (mostly), and find their way in and out of the pool. A beautiful story.

Perfect for: When you’re in the mood for a feel-good flick, and if you don’t mind watching a group of middle-aged men in bathing suits.

Where to watch: I could only find it for rent on YouTube – very much worth it.

Food pairing: I’m going cliche here with pretzels and beer; and if you’re like me, non-alcoholic beer and grain-free pretzels.
