My Rating: 3.89/4 (aka Goes Down Easy)
One line summary: A widowed POTUS starts a new relationship and faces criticism.
The Deets: This is just a fun, smart, well-written, and wonderfully patriotic film; don’t expect it to change your life and you will thoroughly enjoy it. This past weekend was “America Day” in our family; the day my wife and her parents became refugees by leaving Russia to ultimately come to the US. This movie is both a great American film and one that my wife loves, so it’s worth celebrating here. The cast is truly a collection of all stars (Douglas and Bening have wonderful chemistry, and Martin Sheen is sharp as chief of staff, soon to be POTUS in “The West Wing”), Sorkin’s script is top notch (many great lines, especially from a fiery Michael J Fox), and Rob Reiner’s direction is up to task for a grand Hollywood achievement. And you watch it and think why can’t we have intelligent politicians like Andrew Shepherd and his loyal staff? I guess that’s why we love movies.
Perfect for: An evening or rainy weekend day when you just need some classic big Hollywood.
Where to watch: You need to rent it, and if you’re undecided about the $4, let this be your call to arms.
Food pairing: Apple pie a la mode (obviously).
