“The Ballad of Wallis Island”

My Rating: 3.89/4 (aka Must see)

One line summary: A lottery winner invites his favorite musicians to his island for a concert.

The Deets: Don’t let the title put you off – this is a gem of a film, and I can’t remember the last time I laughed so hard. The original premise is that the quirky Charles wins the lottery and pays to have his favorite musical duo come to his home (Wallis Island of course) for a private concert. What unfolds amidst the witty humor and immense downpours is a beautiful concoction of human connection and self-discovery. And the actors do all of their own singing and songwriting! The brilliance is that it almost verges into too much cliche, but it stays on the shore and you are left feeling uplifted and wanting to watch it again so you can catch more of the jokes.

Perfect for: If you love music, British humor, and the combination of the two.

Where to watch: For now it’s just in theatres, but it will soon be streaming.

Food pairing: Scones, biscuits, and coffee.
