“The Best Offer”

My Rating: 3.82/4 (aka Great watch)

One line summary: A distinguished auctioneer evaluates a new client’s house full of antiques and a mystery unfolds.

The Deets: For a film filled with art and beauty, I am surprised we hadn’t seen this one sooner. First of all, I love the originality of the story and Geoffrey Rush is perfectly cast as the lead Virgil Oldman. We meet him with his hundreds of gloves and learn who he is, and then we learn more as his client relationship develops (I am purposefully not sharing details because I don’t want to reveal any spoilers). Suffice it to say that you can guess what’s going to happen (as I did) and yet still be delighted and entertained by the beautiful and mysterious texture of the film. We are asked to suspend our grip on reality knowing that what occurs is not really possible; and for me this is the magic of the movies, especially in the slow pan as the film closes, leaving us to put the pieces together.

Perfect for: Art or antique lovers, if you enjoy Geoffrey Rush’s films, and if you’re in the mood for a luxury-textured mystery.

Where to watch: Rentable on your streaming service of choice.

Food pairing: Champagne, darling (or whatever bubbly beverage you choose).
