“The Birdcage”

My Rating: 3.99/4 (aka The perfect comedy)

One line summary: The hilarious marriage between conservative Ohio and gay South Beach.

The Deets: I mean of course this a total throwback, and the fact that 2026 is its 30 year anniversary kinda blows my mind — both because I have seen it at least a dozen times and because it still holds up (despite the plot hinging on a car phone and an answering machine); in fact, it actually gets funnier with each viewing. We recently rewatched it, and it’s just perfect; the acting, the improvised scenes, the pacing, the quotability of the lines… simply divine. It is right up there as my favorite Robin Williams performance, and he and Nathan Lane are pure magic together, in comedy and heart. And let us not forget the highly underrated comedic talents of Gene Hackman, who is spot on amazing (this and his role in “The Royal Tenenbaums” are tops). Is it possible to be a remake and a maverick comedy at the same time?

Perfect for: If you’ve never seen it then you must, kind of immediately. And if you have, then anytime you need a laugh, it will deliver.

Where to watch: For now it’s included with Amazon Prime, so don’t hesitate, I promise it’s still so much fun.

Food pairing: Something bubbly, something fruity, and something delicious.
