“The Florida Project”

My Rating: 3.96/4 (aka Must see)

One line summary: It’s summer vacation for six-year-old Moonee in a roadside motel near Disney.

The Deets: Whoa. I didn’t expect that. Since a movie reached into me and blew me away. I haven’t yet seen Sean Baker’s “Anora,” but now I know why so many people suggested this film. It is a beautiful force of nature, brilliantly portrayed and edited by Baker. And Brooklynn Prince, as the adorable and feisty Moonee, gives the best child performance I have ever seen (sorry Drew Barrymore and Haley Joel). The story goes that Walk Disney used to walk around his parks on his knees so he could see the sights as a child would; that’s kind of what Baker does here – shows us the roughness of the world through the eyes of a child, while those around her (including the always excellent Willem Dafoe) try to protect her innocence.

Perfect for: If you’re already into the films of Sean Baker, and if you want to experience something new and fresh.

Where to watch: You can rent it on Amazon Prime, and get ready for a wallop.

Food pairing: Pizza.
